Healthy Choice Fresh Mixers, Ziti & Meat Sauce, 6.95-Ounce Bowls (Pack of 6) Review

Healthy Choice Fresh Mixers, Ziti and Meat Sauce, 6.95-Ounce Bowls (Pack of 6)
Average Reviews:

Some engineer somewhere had fun with this one!
Here's how you can be eating your meal inside 5 mins - at least how it worked for me:
1) Pull the plastic film off of the top of the container
2) Peel away the plastic wrapping that holds the strainer lid in place
3) Remove the inner plastic bowl that contains the meat sauce, and set the meat sauce aside for the moment
4) Add just enough water to the uncooked pasta so that the water level reaches the fill line (the fill line is a little tough to see at first)
5) Shake the pasta so that it's all submerged in the water
6) Replace the strainer top and then cook the pasta in a microwave on high for 3 mins 30 secs
7) While the pasta is cooking, open a corner of the meat sauce
8) When the pasta is done, remove it from the microwave and let it sit while you warm up the meat sauce for 30 secs on high.
9) While the meat sauce is warming up, drain any remaining water from the pasta and remove the strainer lid.
10) As soon as the sauce is done open the meat sauce covering the rest of the way, pour it over the pasta, stir, and eat!
Wow! That was pretty convenient, and it actually worked as advertised! It wasn't even too hot to carry!
OK, what about the food?
To start with I'm just a regular guy who usually makes my lunches of the previous night's family dinner left-overs...i.e., not a gourmet, but not taste-dead either...
I was pleased to find that the pasta cooked well, but be advised that if you don't shake the pasta down before you cook it you might find a piece here and there that still has hard spots in it. There was plenty of sauce...no skimping on sauce volume, and the portion size was great for lunchtime. I wasn't stuffed when I was done, but I wasn't still hungry either.
The meat sauce was tangy and mildly spicy. The meat sauce contained small chunks of beef (i.e., looked like hamburger), and you could tell what it was if you looked closely. The pasta and sauce consistency was good, and I enjoyed the entire meal. Be advised that the sauce contains onion and garlic. If you know you have an important meeting or date later on, you will probably want to pack some mints. Say, that would be a great addition...an after-meal mint included with each meal that you can use to fight post-meal garlic breath.
If you like the combination of convenience and pasta, this may well an excellent choice for you.
If you are also environmentally conscious, though, you should probably think twice about this unit. Once you are done with your meal there's really not much you can do with the packaging...just recycle it. If, however, the packaging included a solid lid rather than just the strainer lid, the main container could be washed and then reused as a food storage container...alas, that is not the case.
Anyway, I thought the food was flavorful, the portion was adequate, and the convenience excellent. Environmental challenges drop the rating by a star though.
Lastly, you'll have to determine whether the per unit cost makes this a good deal for you.
4 stars

I'm eating this right now and I don't think I can finish it. It tastes nothing like Kraft's regular Mac & Cheese (which I love) -- this is almost inedible. The cheese flavor is very artificial in the worst way possible. I don't know how this got past product testing.

I've been ordering these Velveeta cups for a while now while deployed in Iraq. It makes for a great tasting, easy, and quick snack when coming back for patrol or when you're hungry and the chow hall is closed. I find the taste and creamyness to be a lot better than easy-mac, but I also like to add different seasonings to them to change the flavor around. Im also glad that this comes in a 10-pack, it's a lot more managable than the Easy Mac 36-pack.

Marie Callender's Home-Style Creations Classic Stroganoff, 6.6 Ounce Packages (Pack of 6) Review

Marie Callender's Home-Style Creations Classic Stroganoff, 6.6 Ounce Packages (Pack of 6)
Average Reviews:

I hate to waste food. Still, this is not the best quick version of Stroganoff I've ever tried.
I'm not certain what Healthy Choice is doing right and Marie Callendar is doing wrong with these nesting style shelf-stable meals, but I suspect it has to do with cooking time and the placement of the water fill line. The noodles in this meal came out a little sticky and not quite as close to al dente as I would have preferred; if ever I must try this product again, I'm going to aim past the fill line and add an extra minute to the maximum cook time on the box. Also, the sauce was on the cream of mushroom side of Stroganoff. Not enough sour cream bite. The meat was alright.
If I had to choose between this or a mystery sandwich from the wheel of death vending machine, I'd pick this. That's not really saying much. Marie Callendar's frozen entrees are much better than this shelf-stable offering.

Marie Callender's Home-Style Creations Creamy Parmesan Chicken, 6.95 Ounce Packages (Pack of 6) Review

Marie Callender's Home-Style Creations Creamy Parmesan Chicken, 6.95 Ounce Packages (Pack of 6)
Average Reviews:

The previous "Home-Style Creation" I had of MC didn't go over so well. Not only did it taste nothing like what it was supposed to, but afterwards it actually made me feel ill. It just didn't sit well. I was so apprehensive about eating the parmesan chicken that I honestly debated returning it to the store uneaten. But I ate it anyway for the sake of a review.
It didn't make me feel ill, but I was honestly underwhelmed by this. There wasn't that much chicken in the actual dish & while I don't honestly expect to get what I see on the packaging picture, I do expect to get at least some of the meat I'm supposed to. The parmesan flavor was "ok", but honestly... I've tasted better. It basically tasted like I opened a can of kid's parmesan pasta mix & upended it onto my food. It wasn't a bad flavor & I may get this again, but honestly I expected better.
Basically, this really didn't seem like it was that much better than those cups of cheese & macaroni that are out there & those are far cheaper. Some will really like this, but I was just let down by this meal. But hey... at least there was no gristle in this package like there was in the other MC meal.

Chef Boyardee must have cheated his way through culinary school, 'cuz this stuff rots! There were very few meatballs...the sauce was way to acidic...and the pasta was quite mushy. Check out Campbell's spaghettios with meatballs if you need a fix.

Simply Asia Noodle Bowl, Sesame Teriyaki, 8.5-Ounces (Pack of 6) Review

Simply Asia Noodle Bowl, Sesame Teriyaki, 8.5-Ounces (Pack of 6)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)

I've been buying the various Simply Asia products at my local Dollar General Store at a really cheap price and I'm certainly pleased with the product(s). This particular one happens to be my favorite but they're all very good.
I'm a scratch cook, preparing supper for my wife and myself every day, (I'm retired, she still works full-time), so I don't usually buy many microwave food products. However, I have fatigued of eating leftovers for lunch every day and these products have turned out to be the perfect solution. I like them much better than frozen dinners in terms of flavor and convenience. I've also found them much more savory than similar and comparable microwave dishes.
For me, the bottom line is flavor and, secondarily, heartiness -- I don't want to be hungry again fifteen minutes after eating lunch. This dish goes into the microwave following a minimum of preparation fuss (all you need is a little water -- everything else is included) and is finished from beginning to end in just minutes. I cannot say enough about the good flavor, and the portion size is fully adequate for me which is a rare occurrence in my past experience with such products since I weigh 265 pounds.
If you have any specific concerns about nutrition or ingredients, you can check those issues on the product description; however, I did wish to let others know how convenient and how tasty these Simply Asia products really are.
Highly recommended!

Marie Callender's Home-Style Creations Meatball Lasagna, 6.49-Ounce Packages (Pack of 6) Review

Marie Callender's Home-Style Creations Meatball Lasagna, 6.49-Ounce Packages (Pack of 6)
Average Reviews:

Very similar to Con-Agra's Healthy Choice line ( as expected, same firm makes this), and nice to have around in your desk for a speedy lunch. As with the other products it is ready in about 3.5 minutes, plus another 20 seconds or so for the sauce.
Very JETSONS style prep, cook the pasta in the microwave, drain ( with included strainer) add sauce and you are good to go.
Things do go a bit downhill with the "mini meatballs", I think. They are tiny round kibble like things made of pork/beef and bread- not pleasing to the eye, and taste just so-so. The sauce itself is pleasing,a good mix of sweet and spicy.
A quick and easy fix, or add on is to add some shredded Parm/Romano to the top of the product after you have mixed it up ( not the grated kind, the shredded- easy to find, lasts forever).
I can easily imagine this product being used by office workers, college types and seniors ( who frequently do not eat well!). GREAT "care package" gift, that would be appreciated. Far better price here, than in traditional stores.
For what it is worth, the packaging is so nice ( as with it's Healthy Choice sibling), that frugal types may well contemplate saving it.
I admit, I once did see what would happen if I put the strainer and bowl in a dishwasher, and they came out fine. Added some mini noodles (ziti I think, from Barella) and a spritz of olive oil. Added in a well known "cheese product" ( starts with a "V") after draining. Super fine Mac and Cheese!
I certainly would not re-use the package much( maybe once), and never the sauce container part, but I just wanted to see .. A far better choice for at home experiments is the Fasta Pasta unit, frequently available on Amazon.
All in all, this is a good product. I dont think the meatball component has been perfected, but this is a very NEW brand. Give it a try.

Average Reviews:

This Mac & Cheese isn't the best tasting that I've ever had.
But it isn't the worst that I've ever had, either.
Adding pepper to it can help improve the taste, or at least, mask it somewhat.
I do not recommend adding salt to this product. It's already loaded with sodium.
According to the nutritional label, it has 750mg of sodium per 248g serving.
Each bowl is 404g in weight, or 1.629 servings, making total sodium per bowl over 1,200mg.
As far as price goes, it isn't bad. If you buy the 12-pack, you're looking at a little less than two bucks each.
Do subscribe & save, and you'll save you even more (see item description for details).

Old El Paso Heat & Serve Fiesta Rice, 8.2-Ounce Packages (Pack of 8) Review

Old El Paso Heat and Serve Fiesta Rice, 8.2-Ounce Packages (Pack of 8)
Average Reviews:

Perhaps I got a bad bag, it was dated with an expiration of Feb 2011, and it is Nov 2010. I cooked the rice per the directions and the smell that the rice had was horribly rancid. I noticed some black particles in the rice which I can only assume was some sort of vegetable which didn't preserve properly and just went bad.
Either way, this was the first time I had purchased this product. I will be steering clear and taking a less convenient approach to fiesta rice next time.

Marie Callender's Sweet Sesame Beef, 6.95 Ounce Packages (Pack of 6) Review

Marie Callender's Sweet Sesame Beef, 6.95 Ounce Packages (Pack of 6)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I work at home and I really don't want to take a lot of time out to prepare even faintly elaborate lunches. And I certainly don't want to take time to go out for lunch. So I rely heavily upon prepared foods. Yes, yes, I know. I will glow in the dark, clog my arteries, lose my hair, etc. But my very much better half shops carefully and the prepared foods I do eat are the "healthiest" available.
That said, these Marie Callender's Home-Style Creations are off to a good start in my book.
The Sweet Sesame Beef has a lower tray filled with rice. Add water, microwave for five minutes and let sit for a minute. I thought five minutes in a 1,200 watt microwave would result in an explosion and rice all over the inside of the microwave. Nope. Never came to a boil. Had to drain a bit of water from the rice, but it was nicely done and tasty.
The sauce which may be unheated or heated for a suggested 30 seconds is sweet and has an inviting taste. There's a fair amount of meat, though it is processed in unappealing machine cut strips.
There is no chemical taste. The quantity is definitely on the light side, which is fine for a lunch.
Overall, a tasty alternative for those with easy to please palates. I'll be trying some of the other varieties as well.
Jerry
