Child of Mine: Feeding with Love and Good Sense Review

Child of Mine: Feeding with Love and Good Sense

So there you all are, the five of you, finally sitting down at the dinner table. You, the mother, have managed to deliver a hot (or at least warm), nutritionally balanced (there is something green on the table), and home cooked (or close to) meal. Carefully, and with a sense of well-being, you dish it out and cut it up and place tidy plates of food in front of your first-grader, your pre-schooler and your toddler. Your husband helps himself. And as you, yourself, raise that first forkful to your lips, your first grader begins to push his food aimlessly around the plate, your pre-schooler shovels huge bites of pasta into his mouth, then pushes his plate away and announces he is waiting for desert (without having touched his broccoli), and your toddler throws all her food on the ground and screams delightedly, "uh-oh, uh-oh, uh-oh." Your sense of well-being vanishes, and you wonder, with your head in your hands, what, on earth, you've done wrong.
If this scenario recurs almost daily at your house (as it does at mine), then you should BUY THIS BOOK. It is one of those rare parenting books that actually gives you answers. It delivers them up in a friendly, no-nonsense style, based on the author's experience as a mother of three and as registered dietician/clinical social worker. Ellyn Satter has seen it all, and we can all benefit from the wealth of her experience. After reading this updated and expanded edition, I have learned to let my children serve themselves from the serving dishes on the table, and then to sit back and not worry about what else happens. Satter's philosophy regarding feeding is that it is the parent's job to determine the what and when of feeding: what food gets offered and when. And it is the child's job to determine if he will eat the food and how much. Elegantly simple; eminently powerful.
The book offers straight-forward advice on feeding your child, from pregnancy through childhood. The sections on infant feeding are informative, educational and, (imagine!) non-judgmental. Satter's advice on the debate between breast feeding and bottle-feeding is comforting and credible. The book also covers introducing solid foods, building positive eating relationships, and avoiding feeding disorders. If you've read and benefited from earlier editions of "Child of Mine", you'll love this new edition, which includes the anecdotes and lessons of Ellyn Satter's many years of experience dealing with families and food.

No Whine with Dinner Review

No Whine with Dinner

I got this book 2 weeks ago, and I've already made several recipes from here! They're healthy, tasty and easy to make. What more is there to say? I have 3 children 6 and under, and they ate everything I made--and they've picked a few more recipes out of the photo section they want to try! If you get this book and haven't checked out their website, blog, and podcast--you must do that immediately. I bring things I make from their first book to events all the time and get tons of complements. These Moms have made our life healthier--they can do it for you too!

The Moms' Guide to Meal Makeovers: Improving the Way Your Family Eats, One Meal at a Time Review

The Moms' Guide to Meal Makeovers: Improving the Way Your Family Eats, One Meal at a Time

These recipes are quick, easy, good, and best of all, a little more adventurous than your normal "family" cookbooks filled with chicken nuggets and pasta. I am not one to plan a week's meals ahead, and I love that I can open this book and find something great to make out of what I have on hand. I've made at least 15 of the recipes and every one was great. The prep time estimates seem to be pretty accurate. Our family in general likes things a little more spicy than most, so some recipes were a little bland but I just add a little more seasoning if that happens. I think they would probably be fine for most people, especially kids.
I think the authors are right on the mark with their advice on kids trying new foods, no "yuck!"s etc. Their philosophy is similar to our own house rules, and as a result my boys (3 and 7) are great eaters. I had the pleasure of meeting the authors at a bookstore signing, and I was very impressed with their knowledge, sensibility, and friendliness!

I must admit I'm a cook book junkie--always at the library and book stores looking for healthy, "kid-friendly" recipes. I purchased this book on a whim five years ago, and would rate it my all time favorite "family" cookbook. Recipes are in chapters: Soups, Chicken & Fish, Ground Beef (Turkey), Vegetables, Grains, Tortillas, Potatos, Pita Pockets, Stir-fry, Salads, Breads, Finishing touches, Snacks & Lunch treats for kids, and finally Beverages. At the end of all recipes are suggestions to "balance your meal." Many of these suggestions are other recipes in the cook book. There are also several microwave recipes throught the book. The tortilla recipes (Bean Burrito--micro & fast!) and pita recipes (Chicken Parmesan Pita)are especially good. The Chocolate Pudding (micro) recipe is a great after school snack. The bottom line is that my kids will eat almost everything I cook from this book, and I can't say that about any other cook book I own.
