The Weeknight Survival Cookbook: How to Make Healthy Meals in 10 Minutes Review

The Weeknight Survival Cookbook: How to Make Healthy Meals in 10 Minutes
Average Reviews:

I am very pleased with this book: it is simple, the recipes can easily be modified, and best of all: there are shopping lists. I find that a large part of my meal executing woes are caused by not having time to plan and make lists. The foods are very middle of the road: not too gourmet, not too many processed foods. A couple meals a week are vegetarian, but carb watchers can add a fish fillet or chicken or something to the meal easily. Lots of veggies are included too. After purchasing a similar book that ended up suggesting I make "duck tacos" this book is a winner. Tip: take it to an office supply store and have the cover laminated and have it spiral-bound for easy use.

The Healthy College Cookbook: Quick. Cheap. Easy.

Putting in 90-100 hour weeks during Graduate school, I needed a basic but comprehensive cookbook where the meals wouldn't take long, the ingredient list wasn't huge, but the meals would still be flavorful. I picked up this little gem. I can't even count how many times I've cooked my favorite recipes out of this book--Vegetarian Lasagna, Balsamic Chicken & Potatoes, the list goes on and on. This cookbook covers every meal item possible and gives you a great combination of classic and unique recipes that anyone can make. You don't have to be a BAD cook to get this book, the authors are sensitive to the fast-paced lifestyle many people have and present this as an alternative to lengthy cooking. And now that I'm out of the Graduate School schedule, guess what -- I'm still making these recipes.

The $5 Dinner Mom Cookbook: 200 Recipes for Quick, Delicious, and Nourishing Meals That Are Easy on the Budget and a Snap to Prepare Review

The $5 Dinner Mom Cookbook: 200 Recipes for Quick, Delicious, and Nourishing Meals That Are Easy on the Budget and a Snap to Prepare

When I became interested in saving money on my grocery bill, I purchased both this book and Mary Ostyn's book, and have read them both thoroughly. Honestly, you will be better off just getting Mary's instead.
Before I get to the negatives, I'd like to state the few positives. I give props to Erin first for recognizing that Americans eat too much, and second for working vegetables into every meal. The reviewer who said that this book is overall unhealthy is exaggerating a little. Yes, she uses regular ground beef, but processed foods are in only a few recipes and frozen vegetables are still vegetables (and she does encourage growing your own). Both Erin and Mary emphasize eating less meat and offer vegetarian meal options. Erin does mention the use of a price book, but Mary does to a MUCH more thorough extent.
Now the other stuff...
The tips in this book are all commons sense-stock up when it's on sale, match coupons to sales. You don't need a book to tell you that. Every positive aspect of this book can be found in Mary Ostyn's book Family Feasts for $75 a Week, and you'll find lots of other information as well. Erin gives an ingredient by ingredient price breakdown in every recipe, which is a good concept, but the problem is that price can vary largely depending on where you are. There are some items that she's apparently been able to find at prices that I've never, ever seen anywhere I've been, and I'm a very price-conscious shopper. So, a lot of her "$5 meals" I would not be able to make for $5. Also, she groups the side dishes right in with the main course, including the price tag, so if you want to change up some of the main course-side dish combos, you're going to alter the price (and if you're not eyeballing the price, there's no reason to buy this book at all). Speaking of side dishes, this book has a lot of "bare" vegetables, so if you have taste buds and like to put a little salt or butter on your veggies, that's going to affect the price.
Some people have expressed concern over the portion sizes in this book for a family of four. Erin has two children, and they are both very, very young, and thus probably consume much less than a teenager or adult. If your two kids are teenagers, most of these recipes will have to be adjusted quite a bit, and thus make the final price much higher than $5 dollars. For that reason, I don't like the concept of putting a dollar value on the meal as a whole, but rather a dollar value on a "per plate" basis. Mary states that she rarely spends more than $1 "per plate."
Mary and Erin differ greatly on their view of coupons. Erin swears by them, and devotes most of the non-recipe section of the book to them. Mary, however, outright says that she rarely uses them. Her reasons are that most food coupons are for highly processed brand name foods that are either unhealthy or have much cheaper generic counterparts. Honestly, most generic foods taste the same. Instead of focusing on coupons, Mary utilizes foods that are inherently a better value to begin with.
Erin does offer some homemade items, such as basic sauces and salad dressings, but you'll find a much larger section on such items in Mary's book. One other thing you will not find in Erin's book is desserts. I believe desserts have their place at the dinner table on occasion, especially if you have children.
As for the recipes themselves, I tried a few of Erin's, and they were just ok. Most of these recipes you could probably come up with yourself or find online, really. There were some I didn't even have to try because I knew how'd they turn out (I cook a lot), and I have a hard time believing kids will eat a few of these. Ziti pasta with plain white sauce and no spices? No thanks. I've tried several of Mary's recipes, and all but one have been really good.Long story short...everything in this book that's worthwhile can be found in Mary's.

I love this cookbook! It's the first book I got where I actually read the ingredients and the directions and felt that I could actually do them. Granted, what they say takes 15minutes, is really more than 15mins unless you're Rachael Ray or something. Also, not all recipes are only 5 ingredients. It'll teach you to make a sauce that needs an 'X' amount of ingredients, then, count that whole sauce as 1 ingredient for the main dish. I think it's cheating, but overall, I still love the book and I can fool people into thinking that I actually know how to cook!

7-Day Menu Planner For Dummies Review

7-Day Menu Planner For Dummies
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Being a woman "of a certain age" and married for 20+ years, I have been cooking for a long time. I admit, I am far from gourmet: I don't specialty shop; I don't watch the TV cooking shows or reality shows starring angry chefs and their desperate-to-please minions; glossy gourmet food and recipe magazines make me nervous.
I do have skills. I have one small shelf of cookbooks in my kitchen. I can cover the basics, having more or less successfully fed and nourished a healthy family of five for some time now. Culled from a 25-year-old, well-worn copy of the cooking classic: BETTY CROCKER'S COOKBOOK (1987), family magazines and, in more recent years, recipe searches on AllRecipes.com for the iPhone and iPad, I have compiled my very own cookbook: a mish-mash of photocopies, hand-written classics and typed recipes, all carefully preserved in plastic page protectors and haphazardly "filed" in a white, plastic-coated (easy wipe!), 3-ring binder.
However, having said all of that:
Even with my vast and very practical culinary knowledge and experience, I love, Love, LOVE Susan Nicholson's 7-DAY MENU PLANNER FOR DUMMIES! An instant new-NEW classic, this book should be a treasured kitchen bible for every man, woman or young adult trying to prepare and serve nutritious, delicious, affordable and do-able meals for a family, couple or even healthy meals for one.
Susan Nicholson is a registered dietitian and creator of the 7-Day Menu Planner newspaper column, featured in major newspapers and in online syndication, too. She is a culinary professional and a talented writer with a lot of experience and a great sense of humor, which makes 7-Day Menu Planner for Dummies more than just another cookbook.
7-Day Menu Planner for Dummies gives you a year's worth of weekly dinner idea and recipes that "take about 30 minutes to prepare, contain an average of 30 percent calories from fat, and use common ingredients to save time and money." It is a well-organized and simple roadmap for menu planning, offering great recipes, practical instruction and tips, and a very consistent weekly plan of coordinated dinners: Family Night; Kid's Night (not just for children!); Express Meal; Budget Night; Heat and Eat; Meatless Night; and Easy Entertaining. I love the fact that the week's meals are coordinated to use ingredients in common and a central philosophy of reduce, re-use, recycle and re-format throughout the week's plan. (Trust me, *not* repetitious, you will not get bored!)
7-Day Menu Planner for Dummies makes planning and preparing meals less of a chore and more simple, easy, quick, healthy and delicious. Whether you are an old pro in the kitchen or a culinary "noob" (as my kids say), make room on your cookbook shelf for a new classic!

We first checked this book out from our public library to test it and now we can't live without it!
The recipes are delicious and real-life friendly. We do not have diabetes in our household, but want to put healthy nutritious foods on the table.
In my view, any recipe that passes diabetic guidelines will keep the appetite satisfied and fuel our bodies appropriately. But most importantly to us, these recipies appeal to our senses in making mealtime a pleasure with foods we want to enjoy again and again.

This book is loaded with really tasty and easy dinner ideas. Instead of saying exactly what the recipe calls for it gives you ideas of what to combine based on what you have on hand - no fancy ingredients to shop for!!! Also has really easy measuring (ie: a handful of vegies per person). The recipes are really quick to make and are easy enough for kids to help make supper. This book has taken the stress out of that "just home and have to get supper on the table hour!!!!"

Family Feasts for $75 a Week: A Penny-wise Mom Shares Her Recipe for Cutting Hundreds from Your Monthly Food Bill Review

Family Feasts for $75 a Week: A Penny-wise Mom Shares Her Recipe for Cutting Hundreds from Your Monthly Food Bill
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I bought this after reading all the glowing reviews, and while perhaps they are somewhat warranted, I was still a bit disappointed. The not-so-glowing reviews failed to address WHY they felt disappointed so I'll do so here.
First off before I get to it, understand that it IS a good book and is worth the buy because you will find some ideas to shave a few dollars off of your grocery bill. Just know that the average family will very likely never get the cost down to the promised $75 a week. Some can, most probably cannot and here is why:
* She tells you that she saves on produce because she has a vegetable garden and an orchard (pg 46, 47). If you have a house and a lot of time this is great, but nothing none of us have not thought of before. If you live in an apartment without a community garden, then you're sunk altogether. She is careful to not say that you SHOULD do this, but this IS part of the $75/wk plan.
* Along that same notion, she cans her items too. If I had a garden, I would probably can also. However she did say that you could stock up on in-season items and can those. Just remember to do the math yourself because you may find that the "sale price" coupled with the cost of jars, etc. is no cheaper than buying a can. You really only save well here if you have a garden.
* She frequently talks about freezing food and mentions a deep freezer often enough to make you feel that this isn't going to work for you. Granted, she DOES offer tips on freezing for those with space limitations, but to get the full benefit that she describes, a deep freeze is essential. The first example off the top of my head is sales on milk. You can't buy several gallons with only a standard-sized freezer and still keep food in there. That's just one example, another is buying ground beef on sale, she buys 30 pounds of it and there is no way that will fit in a standard-sized freezer.
* She promises you that you don't have to be a slave in the kitchen by not taking shortcuts (not using canned soups, etc.), but remember that all of that does add time. I'm not one to complain because I prefer to do mine the old way anyway, it's just that she has a lot of kids who can help her. We don't! I cannot assign one child to chop onions, one to separate, peel and mince garlic and so forth. In fact, with teens most of mine aren't even home until after dinner is done. Having multiple kids does reap benefits, having only a few can be a hindrance.
* She pretty much feeds her family 3 oz servings of meat (pg 24), or less, per meal. While this is definitely the healthy way, it is also less practical for some. This would mean an average 2-lb (precooked) meat loaf - as mentioned below - would feed 10 to 12 people in her house, but it would NOT in my house. Just keep that in mind as a tip.
* A lot of her tips are good, but nothing I've not thought of before. Are we really in an age where we don't think about how to save money? Do we have to rely on books to tell us what is common sense? That sounds terribly cynical, I know, but it appears to be true. Granted, there ARE some good tips in there of things I've not yet thought of, but those are fewer than the number that I already did know.
* She recommends going to 4 or 5 different stores to shop for sale prices. Again, most of us have probably thought about this but it is entirely unrealistic for working moms. SAHMs could do this, but not working moms.
So now that I've complained enough, let me tell you what I do love about it to prove why I said it was worth the buy. There are some great tips, tricks and recipes. Some examples are:
* If for no other reason, the recipes are fantastic (so far). Granted, I've not tried them all but her meatloaf (as just one example) is just amazing. It tastes just like my Mother's recipe that I've (for whatever odd reason) never been able to duplicate. I swear she was leaving something out! ;)
* None of the recipes call for cream of *insert type here* soup. They're all adapted to do it yourself without you even realizing it. That alone was mentioned in a review (over on a money saving blog I frequent), which made me buy the book. I am in the process of replacing all my recipes with this very thing. Excellent notion.
* She has an innovative idea for making oatmeal; use a rice cooker, if you have one of course. It inspired me to Google "rice cooker recipes" and to my surprise, there is a whole world of those out there. Very cool!
* She lays out her shopping rules and the max she will spend on certain items. I love this idea and I myself have never done that. I've always bought when on sale, but I never had a rule that I will NOT buy something unless it is less than X number of dollars.
* She does offer tips on everything from baby food to even toilet paper. Just remember that a lot of this is probably stuff you've heard before. Not all of course, but most. Still, if you learn only a few things, then it's worth the cost of the book.
She does have some excellent advice. I just feel the need to once again stress that you have to understand you will very likely not feed your family for $75 a week as promised on the cover. You'll cut costs, surely, but not get it that low unless you start/use a garden, a deep freeze and can your own food.

Dream Dinners: Turn Dinnertime into Family Time with 100 Assemble-and-Freeze Meals Review

Dream Dinners: Turn Dinnertime into Family Time with 100 Assemble-and-Freeze Meals
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I've been to the Dream Dinners franchise several times now and like about 80% of the meals I bring home. I was hoping the book would provide many of the recipes that I had prepared at Dream Dinners but it doesn't. I can understand they don't want to compete with their franchise stores.
Many of the reheating directions are vague and several of the recipes you don't know whether to freeze the meat in the sauce or freeze them separate. Not one picture, doesn't Morrow Cookbooks have a food photographer? And the labels in the back of the book (for labelling your food) why didn't they make those sticky labels? The book started out at $19.95 less than a month ago, it's already down to $13 on Amazon and even cheaper through other sellers so that should tell you something. Would recommend Super Suppers Cookbook or Don't Panic - Dinner's in the Freezer: Great-Tasting Meals You Can Make Ahead for the same concept but better recipes.
Make sure you visit the dream dinners website. There are over 45 pages of corrections for this cookbook! what? You're telling me that between the authors, editors and whoever else had a hand in this cookbook that there were 45 pages of mistakes? Ridiculous. See the comments, I added where you'd have to go to the website to find them. Thus do not give this cookbook as a gift unless you want to print 45 additional pages and add to the gift bag!
I would also recommend Cook Once, Eat Twice Slow Cooker Recipes (Bertter Homes and Gardens), it's more a slow cooker cookbook where you make two nights worth of meals in the crockpot and then turn the second night's dinner into something different. It's really a good cookbook. Anything is better than this one.

"What's for dinner?"

If the sound of those three words sends you reeling or, worse, straight to the nearest fast-food chain or take-out joint, then relax. Dream Dinners will change all that forever.

With their new cookbook, Stephanie Allen and Tina Kuna, founders of Dream Dinners, bring the successful philosophy behind their hundreds of assemble-and-freeze-meal stores across America into home kitchens. Dream Dinners offers up one hundred recipes for flavorful meals made with easy-to-find ingredients.

The premise is simple: Scoop or pour ingredients into baking pans or plastic bags, then store the uncooked dishes in the freezer. Later in the week or month, when dinnertime rolls around, just pop one of the frozen meals into the oven. Each recipe is provided two ways: One, prepare just one meal for the night, or two, prepare enough for three meals and freeze the other two. Dinner after sports practice, music lessons, and play rehearsals has never been easier!

In addition to recipes for hearty, family-pleasing classics such as Baked Pesto Ravioli with Chicken, Beef and Zucchini Casserole, and Cider-Braised Pork Loin Chops, Stephanie and Tina give a wealth of time-saving shopping tips and cooking pointers. More than for convenience, eating dinner together provides benefits for the whole family. Study after study shows that mealtime matters. Families who dine together form stronger bonds, and kids get better grades and develop lifelong healthful eating habits. Dream Dinners makes it easy for families to gather around the dinner table and share the ups and downs of the day.

With Dream Dinners, you will spend less time stressing in the kitchen and more time connecting with family and friends.

Quick Fix Meals: 200 Simple, Delicious Recipes to Make Mealtime Easy Review

Quick Fix Meals: 200 Simple, Delicious Recipes to Make Mealtime Easy
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I preordered this book (placed my order on Feb 21), and it arrived Mar 13 (it didn't hit the stands until Mar 12, so I was impressed with the Amazon delivery service -- especially since I did the Super Saver shipping). But anyway, about the book...
I was looking forward to this book's release, since I enjoy the show. I compare Robin Miller to Rachel Ray's "30 minute Meals" series, so I'm also comparing their cookbooks. The recipes in this book are very similar to Rachel's recipes. If you're looking to spice up your dinner time, you'll find little difference between Robin's book and Rachel's series (they have the same types of recipes with interesting ingredients and flavors that "normal" folks like me would never think of trying). Most recipes don't have tons of ingredients, but they do have ingredients that require everyday folks to make a special trip to the grocery store. Don't expect to open this book and just start having dinner.
Both cooks claim to have the secret to great dinner in a flash. I sum up the difference between Robin and Rachel as this: Robin just takes you a few steps back and tells you HOW to make it quick, not just how to cook. She comes out the winner because she gives you the secret: pre-planning, prepping, and a well-stocked kitchen.
The first chapter in the book explains her strategies, such as "In the Bag" -- creating meal kits and storing them in fridge or freezer for later use, and "Morphing It" -- using one dish to create many others. Not exactly rocket science, but if you're a full-time working mom like me, you just never quite heard or saw it put this way.
She also includes a section on how to get your kitchen to be "quick fix" friendly. Prepping, storing, freezing, 5 basic sauces to prepare and store, her top 10 never-without pantry and fridge items.
The recipes include time-saver tips, ways to "quick fix it" your way. The Morph It section starts with a main recipe, and the "morph it" recipes follow (no searching through indexes to find the matching recipes -- a BIG PLUS). All the recipes include timing guides for prep and actual cooking time, so you can plan when you want to prep and when you want to cook. The index is complete, but is organized like the indexes in those coooking magazines at the grocery store.
The print in this book is small! It's in a green ink and a brown ink, which is sort of easy on the eyes, but it could be a bit bigger. Also, all the recipes that are on the left page have the ingredient list on the inside of the page, near the center fold. I don't know why they did this, because I found myself pulling the book apart to see the recipe list. This will definitely wear the book out quicker than normal.
I'm leaning more towards Robin's book, only because of her overall strategy included in the book (prepping ahead, morphing one dish into many). The authors did a good job of trying to make the book organized and not chaotic or daunting. The language is very friendly, not formal. It stays true to the whole concept of de-stressing the dinnertime dilemma. Rachel's great too -- this book just speaks more to women like me, who feel guilty about how many nights I put $5 pizza on the table when my family deserves better.
UPDATE: I've had the book for 2 months now. Still love it! But one downer: the dessert section could have been taken from a Sandra Lee "Semi-Homemade" recipe book. Cool Whip, jam, chocolate sauce, with a bit of fruit thrown in.
NEW UPDATE: This book has really changed the way I shop and cook. I have several very helpful habits now!! I ALWAYS have pre-cut onions, green peppers, celery, and potatoes in my freezer. When I make any gravy or sauce, I make a big batch and store it in a ziploc bag. And once or twice a month, I'll cook a whole bag of boneless skinless chicken breasts, slice them up, and toss then in ziploc bags in the freezer. Just these few tricks have TREMENDOUSLY changed how fast I get dinner on the table. Even if I didn't like the recipes (which I mostly do), these new habits made the book price worth it 20x over!!!!!

I got this book 2 weeks ago, and I've already made several recipes from here! They're healthy, tasty and easy to make. What more is there to say? I have 3 children 6 and under, and they ate everything I made--and they've picked a few more recipes out of the photo section they want to try! If you get this book and haven't checked out their website, blog, and podcast--you must do that immediately. I bring things I make from their first book to events all the time and get tons of complements. These Moms have made our life healthier--they can do it for you too!

The I Love Trader Joe's Cookbook: 150 Delicious Recipes Using Only Foods from the World's Greatest Grocery Store Review

The I Love Trader Joe's Cookbook: 150 Delicious Recipes Using Only Foods from the World's Greatest Grocery Store

I am a frequent shopper of Trader Joe's; and this gem of a cooking book has enticed me to explore deep into the crevasses of my "local Joe". Not only have the recipes encouraged me to try more TJ's products, Cherie Mercer Twohy has inspired me to try new flavors and combination's of foods with her wisdom from her "years" of shopping at Trader Joe's and as a professionally trained chef.
You will want to read this cook book from cover to cover. The introduction is FILLED with how to get the best from your Trader Joe's, and most of the recipes include tips and/or a personal comment and sometimes a bit of humor, "Dental floss works great for cutting the goat cheese--just make sure to use the plain version, not the minty-fresh."
If you shop at Trader Joe's, you are probably concerned with the quality of food you eat. With this book you get the quality of TJ's products included in recipes that will put smiles on the faces of your family and friends and build your confidence as a cook. Oh! And most of the recipes, from starters to entrée's and dessert, can be prepared and served in 45 minutes or less.
Cherie has also included recipes that are vegetarian and gluten free. I especially appreciate the Hoardables and Pantry Staples List at the end of the book, because I was one of the victims of TJ's amazing frozen Pie Crust becoming a seasonal item. Take my word, you won't be disappointed.

Healthy Meals for Less: Great-Tasting Simple Recipes Under $1 a Serving Review

Healthy Meals for Less: Great-Tasting Simple Recipes Under $1 a Serving

I have used this book for several recipes this past week and my picky family has enjoyed every dish. I like how it has the price break down although I have not verified them yet. The dishes are healthy, flavorful and inexpensive. I feel as though my arsenal of meals to make for my family within budget has multiplied. I am a person that likes to try new things but hate cookbooks that call for ingredients I don't have in my kitchen. The reason why I have not verified price is because I had all the ingredients in my kitchen already. No special trips to the store. This book is a must for every mom who would like to make from scratch, healthy, inexpensive meals

What's-For-Dinner Cookbook: A Year-Long Program of Balanced Dinners for Your Family Review

What's-For-Dinner Cookbook: A Year-Long Program of Balanced Dinners for Your Family
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I have had this book for about 3 months now, so far using the "Winter" recipes.
The concept is good: Gather a year's worth of recipes together, split them up into seasonal sections, and create shopping lists. Give advance notice for the next day's meals, and prepare ingredients ahead of time. For someone who has a difficult time menu planning, I thought this book would be my answer.
But the directions are not so good. Some directions will have you cook pork chops until you could resole your shoes with them. Some will tell you to bring the ingredients of a soup to a boil, but omit the part about adding water. Some will include ingredients, yet never tell you what to do with them. Some directions will tell you an important step, but only at the end of the recipe, when it's too late. Some have incorrect cooking times, leading to undercooked/overcooked meals.
Then there's the cream-of-something soup recipes. 43 cans for the year. 18 cans of cream-of-something for the Spring section alone! Before deciding on the week's recipes, I scan the ingredients for C-o-?'s, and cross those recipes right off the list.
Of course taste is subjective. Maybe you would like a dish with cream-of-mushroom, a pint of sour cream, 2 cups of cheese, 1/2 cup of butter and some hash brown potatoes. It was nearly deadly for my family. Gag reflex for my 3.5 year old, and doubled-over gas-filled intestinal pain for us.
Some recipes are unnecessary for a busy family. My first go at the book was Sloppy Joes with Stovetop Baked Beans. In the interest of time and money, I skipped the ingredient list and bought a can of Sloppy Joe mix and a can of Baked Beans.
Some recipes are good. We liked "Mom's" Meat Loaf and Mexican Lasagna for instance.
If you get this book: read, re-read, re-re-read the recipes and make sure you make notes and fix the omissions and errors before starting. Use your own common cooking sense: if the recipe calls for you to cook chicken breasts, stuffed with cheese and topped with spaghetti sauce, for 1 hour, you might want to adjust that a bit so you don't end up with dried-out, tasteless boiled chicken with cheese melted right out of it, sitting in watery spaghetti sauce. And if you like cream-of-whatever soup, then get your casserole dish ready... you're going to need it.

Betty Crocker One-Dish Meals: Casseroles, Skillet Meals, Stir-Fries and More for Easy, Everyday Dinners (Betty Crocker Books) Review

Betty Crocker One-Dish Meals: Casseroles, Skillet Meals, Stir-Fries and More for Easy, Everyday Dinners (Betty Crocker Books)

For me, this is a perfect cookbook. I don't have a lot of room in my kitchen. I want meals I can cook quickly. The recipes is food that you pretty much throw together in a hurry. Even the more intricate recipes are easy. These are the kind of meals that women cooked in the 50s, '60s and '70s before the Food Network got middle America women (and yes men too) wanting to be gourmet chefs. If I had the time and especially the room, it would be fun to try more elaborate dishes. But for people who want something more than frozen meals, this is a great cookbook.
