The Ultimate Metabolism Diet: Eat Right for Your Metabolic Type Review

The Ultimate Metabolism Diet: Eat Right for Your Metabolic Type

(More customer reviews)
Wow...since posting my review there have been a lot of "planted" reviews coached by Dr. Rigden. PLEASE READ THIS REVIEW. IT WILL GIVE YOU THE ACTUAL DETAILS OF THIS BOOK AND WHY NOT TO WASTE YOUR MONEY ON IT.
I had very high hopes for this book. Afterall, the author actually has the credentials to write on this subject! He's not just an M.D., but one of only 15 Fellows of the American Bariatric Society in 50 years. And he really sounds as if he's offering something new and different and EFFECTIVE in the introduction and early pages.
First, he offers screening questionnaires to determine the area or areas of your metabolic dysfunction, which he calls "switched metabolism." They screen for (1) carbohydrate sensitivity, (2) metabolic syndrome, (3) hormonal imbalances, (4) food hypersensitivity, and (5) liver detoxification. I already knew I have metabolic syndrome, hormonal imbalances, and that my liver needs a little support, so it was no big news to find that the screening questionnaires simply confirmed all that. If you are young or perhaps new to the world of how hormones and the metabolism process differs from person to person and impacts one's health, you MIGHT get a little information from going through these few pages of the book. Otherwise, my guess is that you are probably not going to discover anything you didn't already know about yourself.
Chapter 2 was especially disappointing to me. So far, all you've done is read the intro, and gone through the screening questionnaires, and then he suddenly veers from his course of information and asks you to sign a personal weight loss contract. It reads: My weight today is ___. My goal weight in 4 weeks is ___. My goal weight in 12 weeks is ___. My goal weight in 6 months is ___. My goal weight in 1 year is ___. blah blah bah. He's given NO information about what might be a reasonable goal for someone whose body has been resistive to every weight loss effort you've ever tried, and you've tried a lot! This contract is laughable and bogus and has absolutely no place in this book, in my opinion. He then has you list ten reasons why you want to lose weight. Like we've never done this exercise before, right? And then the chapter finishes with general dieting advice we've gotten from every diet book we've ever read: remove all "danger" foods from your house, plan your meals, eat slowly, write down what you eat, ask yourself "why do I want to eat?" before you eat, and then what he believes is the utmost in wisdom--be patient, persistent, plan ahead, think positively, and perspire, aka focus and do the work. Yeah, those are so so helpful and enlightening and oh my goodness I've just never ever thought of those being key to successful weight loss before. NOT!
In my opinion, Chapter 2 shouldn't even be in his book.
Chapter 3 addresses carbohydrate sensitivity in a little more detail, although frankly, not really much. There are other authors who have done a far better job of explaining carb sensitivity than he does. He offers many "case studies" to illustrate how his techniques work, but frankly, they aren't helpful. His suggested treatment for carb sensitivity? Soy protein powder meal replacement program (replaces breakfast and lunch daily) and snacks and an evening meal of caveman/cavewoman eating (aka low carb/good carb). You follow this until you've lost 10 percent of your weight, and then you switch over to a low glycemic-index diet, aka a modified mediterranean diet. And he recommends supplements.
While he indicates that there is some controversy about soy and its role in cancer, he believes there is sufficient evidence to make soy safe to ingest. For the most part, he simply asks us to take his word for it. My largest disappointment here is that he never addresses the larger concern about soy I've been reading in the research, and that is that soy actually SLOWS DOWN metabolism. Why risk further slowing down an already impaired metabolism by consuming this soy protein meal replacement powder? There are other protein powder choices, and I think he should've been more forthcoming about other options. I smell a possible connection between him and the maker of this soy powder.....
His information on the caveman/cavewoman diet and the low glycemic-load diet is scant. But that's because there's just not all that many foods you get to eat. And his recommendation is to follow the low glycemic-load diet for the rest of your life. It is very easy to find food guidelines for these types of diet all over the internet or in books that do far more jsutice to the subject that this book does.
Chapter 4 addresses metabolic syndrome, and isn't much different from Chapter 3--a glossing over of metabolic syndrome, more useless case studies about his patients, and then comes his suggested treatment: The caveman/cavewoman diet (which includes the same soy protein powder meal replacement for breakfast daily) until you've lost 10 percent of your weight, and then you switch over to a low glycemic-index diet, aka a modified mediterranean diet. And he recommends supplements, exercising, and drinking water. And his recommendation is to follow the low glycemic-load diet for the rest of your life.
Sound familiar? But wait, there's more.
Chapter 5 addresses hormonal imbalances, especially thyroid, estrogen dominance, and PCOS. To implement any of his recommendations here, you have to find a physician willing to prescribe thyroid medication and/or natural progesterone. There aren't that many docs out there willing to do this, especially if you are one of those under-diagnosed with hypothyroid, which you most likely are. More of his case studies which are neither enlightening nor helpful. And once again his treatment strategies: more of the soy protein powder replacement meal and following the low-glycemic-load diet.
Overall, a very unhelpful chapter with very little substantive information.
Chapter 6 moves on to address food hypersensitivities. The suggested program: nothing more then the usual elimination diet, gradually re-introducing various foods in order to find those that may cause you problems. A lengthy and daunting process which one may find nearly impossible to do. And other authors have addresses this concern, food hypersensitivity, far better than this book does. My recommendation is that if you score high enough on his screening questionnaire to indicate that food hypersensitivity may be a problem for you, then go get better books about the subject.
Chapter 7 addresses the final metabolic challenge: impaired liver detoxification. His recommendations for detoxing your liver are the standard--go on an elimination diet for 4 weeks, reintroduce foods slowly, (note that these steps are identical to that follwed in the previous chapter for food allergies/hypersensitivities), and consume a detox beverage such as ultraclear by the same company that makes the soy protein powder he pushes for all his other plans. The food you can eat during this month-long torture is miniscule, unsatisfying, and would cause Ghandi to lose weight. His suggestion to "choose a 4-week period for the program in which you do not plan to travel, have company, or participate in stressful events" is absolutely laughable!
And of course what diet book would be complete without the chapter on emotional eating, dealing with stress, and self-image assessment. A handful of recipes in the back, and that's it. That's his ULTIMATE metabolism diet.
Don't waste your money on this one, folks. Get it from your local library if you must, but there is absolutely nothing new in this book, and it's very clear that he is out to make money and fame for himself, and little else. I also wonder about his connection to the company whose products he pushes for almost every treatment recommendation he makes?????

The New Glucose Revolution Low GI Vegetarian Cookbook: 80 Delicious Vegetarian and Vegan Recipes Made Easy with the Glycemic Index Review

The New Glucose Revolution Low GI Vegetarian Cookbook: 80 Delicious Vegetarian and Vegan Recipes Made Easy with the Glycemic Index
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
When my husband developed acid reflux, it was recommended that he lower his carb intake. As long time lacto vegetarians (no fish, meat or eggs, yes to dairy), this sounded particularly challenging.
I bought 3 different low carb cookbooks from Amazon a month ago: "Low-carb Vegetarian" by Celia Brooks Brown, "Carb Conscious Vegetarian: 150 Delicious Recipes For Healthy Lifestyle" by Robin Robertson and "The New Glucose Revolution Low GI Vegetarian Cookbook: 80 Delicious Vegetarian and Vegan Recipes Made Easy with the Glycemic Index" by Dr. Jennie Brand-Miller
After a month of consistent cooking I have rarely used Brown's "Low-carb Vegetarian" which is laden with ~50% recipes that use eggs. There are some great recipes in there if you eat eggs though.
On the other hand, my copy of "Carb Conscious Vegetarian: 150 Delicious Recipes For Healthy Lifestyle" by Robin Robertson is a bit dog-eared already. Delicious, innovative recipes with new ways to use foods common to the vegetarian and wonderful exploring of unusual but easily available new veggies and protein options.
"The New Glucose Revolution Low GI Vegetarian Cookbook" by Dr. Jennie Brand-Miller was rich with information and great recipes. It taught me a lot.
But by far Robertson's "Carb Conscious Vegetarian" is the best.
I will say that I don't know either of these authors and am doing this to help a buyer who may be wondering which one to get...
By the way, a low carb/lower acid diet has really eased the acid reflux my husband suffers from. We eat a main meal during the day and a protein drink at night, even if working: switched when consuming. And I am starting to lose weight...
Hope this helps!

Men's Health Muscle Chow: More Than 150 Meals to Feed Your Muscles and Fuel Your Workouts
Average Reviews:

It's hard to find a decent clean-eating cookbook. This one certainly is decent, but I wouldn't give it much more praise than that. There are some recipes that are pretty good and all of them are quite straightforward, but my major problem with the book is that some of the recipes are complete fluff that could have been all compiled onto a single page ("quick bites", or something like that). For instance, the "Fix and Eat Sardine Sandwich". Now, I'm going from memory here, but I'm pretty sure that the steps boiled down to these steps: Take two slices of bread, spread mustard on each slice, then put the sardines between the two pieces of bread and eat them. Sorry, Gregg, but I'm a healthy eater, not someone who's never been in a kitchen before. There are other recipes like this ("Slice up a head of lettuce and serve it with mustard as dipping sauce", for example) that are really wastes of space.
Also, it would have been good to see more explanation regarding carb-cycling (or carb-shifting as he describes it), along with macronutrient breakdowns for the different eating phases Gregg describes in the book.
There's some good stuff in here, that's for sure, but it's too much like a fluffernutter sandwich: lots of healthy potential surrounded, unfortunately, by too much fluff.

Breaking Free from Emotional Eating Review

Breaking Free from Emotional Eating
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This book changed my life in all the ways I was longing for it to be changed.
I read Geneen's work in the middle of my eating disorder. I didn't begin using it right away because I didn't trust it. I didn't like it. I didn't think it would work. It does.
Different approaches work for different people. I think this worked for me because, deep down Geneen's philosophy is in accordance with my own. I wanted to be my own authority. I wanted it bad enough to give this a try. I didn't tell myself I had to do this forever. I didn't have blind faith. I also didn't give up on it in the first three months. I gave myself a year to decide. A year, where I promised myself I wouldn't diet. A year in which to work through every exercise I reasonably could. In addition to committing to this book, I continued seeing a therapist on a weekly basis. That helped, but this book is what ultimately gave me coping tools. I know that I was in the extreme, not everybody needs as much help as I did. I also know that distorted eating is very normal in this culture. I feel blessed to have been able to examine something so fundamental, and transform what was a problem to a benefit. I've read all of Ms. Roth's books and enjoyed each of them. This one has a great combination of explaining and exercises to do, which is why I chose it. However, the chapters are widely divergent in terms of work. Her other book "Why Weight" appears to be the same exact work better organized, but less expository. If you are unsure if this work is for you, buy or borrow "Breaking Free". If after reading through it you feel excited but overwhelmed by the work load, you may wish to try "Why Weight" as a work book.
I rarely review books. I chose to review this one because it was life changing, and a big risk. Hopefully my experience is of some help.

Stouffer's Lean Cuisine Entree Chicken & Vegetables, 10.5-Ounce, 12-Count Boxes Review

Stouffer's Lean Cuisine Entree Chicken and Vegetables, 10.5-Ounce, 12-Count Boxes
Average Reviews:

I work in a suburban office that is a few miles from the closest place to eat lunch, so rather than get into my car, I generally eat at my desk. I often eat a Lean Cuisine because it is convenient to store in the freezer in our office kitchen and quick and easy to make. Of all the different varieties that I have tried, I agree with the other review that this is one of the tastiest. The vegetables and pasta are not soggy, and the chicken is not rubbery as in some other frozen lunches that I have tried.
I usually buy this particular Lean Cuisine at my local Shoprite, where the normal price is three dollars and fifty cents, and on sale a dollar less. For the price I pay it is a good value for lunch.

Hungry Girl 300 Under 300: 300 Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner Dishes Under 300 Calories Review

Hungry Girl 300 Under 300: 300 Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner Dishes Under 300 Calories
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This is actually my first HG book. I'd heard alot of hype about the website/show/books, but didn't know much about them until I happened across the show one evening. I liked that the recipes she was making seemed quick and easy, but appealed to the not-so-healthy cravings we all get sometimes. I signed up for the mailing list and friended on FB...hence how I found out about the new cookbook. I preordered it for the Nook the day before release and got the download early yesterday morning.
Having spent a good portion of yesterday and this morning perusing the recipes, I have mixed feelings about this cookbook. While I love that they are all under 300 calories and many look like they would be tasty, alot of them don't seem all that healthy. Artificial sweeteners are used ALOT (as a caveat, she does add as a tip more than once that you can use Truvia or regular sugar instead), and while the calories are low, the sodium and carb levels on several recipes I saw were pretty dang high.
Another little nit-picky thing that bugs me in cookbooks that is also in this one is brand-name dropping. There's alot of brand names used and in a good majority of the recipes (Laughing Cow, Pillsbury, Fiber One, etc). I realize that the author is probably getting kickbacks to endorse particular brands in their cookbook, but if I wanted constant advertisements for brands, I'd buy that brand's cookbook or a magazine. There is a "Recommended Products" list at the back of the book and I like that...just wish all the name-dropping could have been confined to there.
On the plus side, there is good website support for the book. The ebook version doesn't include any pictures, but there are pictures of every dish on the website, along with WW point values for those using the WW system. The WW points doesn't matter to me, but any cookbook I buy absolutely has to have pictures. Not having them right there on my ereader with the recipe is kind of a bummer, but there are very few cookbooks that have pictures for every single recipe...so it comes out a win. Also the sheer volume of recipes insures that there is something here for everyone. There are also lots of good tips scattered throughout the book.
Overall, I think this looks to be a pretty decent cookbook. I'll probably tweak some of the recipes to suit my own tastes/standards, but most of them look pretty tasty...and the fact that they're lo-cal is a bonus.
***EDIT*** Having perused the entire book now, I'm not too impressed. Way too many processed foods used and, due to that fact, a huge portion of the recipes were also super-high in sodium...NOT healthy at all. What's the point of going lo-cal if you're going to be bloated and have clogged arteries? Also, so many of the dishes seem very "heavy"...as in multiple types of sugary (or "Splenda-y" as the case usually was) ingredients layered into one dish, or "faux-fried" covered in sauce, topped with cheese. So many look like those odd "family" dinners you'd find in a 1940s cookbook, but with the high-calorie (but real) ingredients subbed out with 21st century "better living through chemicals" processed "fat-free"/"lo-cal" fake foods. I suppose it's good and well for the occasional craving, but for a truly healthy lifestyle (and not a lo-cal "diet" that might drop the pounds in the short-term but is detrimental in the long run), I wouldn't use this cookbook regularly without doing alot of subbing of ingredients. Still giving it 3 stars because there are some decent dishes as well as some that aren't so great in their published form, but could be good with some tweaking. It's inspired me to start cooking more, so I have to give it credit for that.
Having read reviews for the previous HG cookbooks, I've seen the same complaints. A pity because the concept might be good, but sad that so many people are fooled into thinking that these dishes are healthy just because they're "lo-cal" and/or "low fat". I'd hope that Lisa would start trending more away from the processed foods...but with so many people who don't care about that (and so many manufacturers of processed foods who are sponsoring her), I guess she has no reason to change.

Great Program with scientific evidence that will help most all diabetics. Have been on this program for 5 weeks. Within the first week my blood glucose levels dropped 15-20 points. In the last four weeks I have maintained within 80-110 on my morning checks. Have used many of the recipes and amazingly am not hungry at all. I have eliminated the nightly dosage of Metformin. My goal is to eliminate all medications. The American Diabetes Association should rethink their diet plans.

Until Dr. Barnard's scientific breakthrough, most health professionals believed that once you developed diabetes, you were stuck with it—and could anticipate one complication after another, from worsening eyesight and nerve symptoms to heart and kidney problems. But as this groundbreaking work reveals, this simply is not true. In a series of studies—the most recent funded by the National Institutes of Health—Dr. Barnard has shown that it is possible to repair insulin function and reverse type 2 diabetes. By following his scientifically proven, life-changing program, diabetics can control blood sugar three times more effectively than with the standard diet; and cut back on and in some cases eliminate medications while reducing the risk of diabetes complications.

"The long overdue epic scientific breakthrough in diabetes is here…an obvious must-read for health professionals and for diabetic and potential diabetic patients." —Caldwell B. Esselstyn, Jr., MD, preventive cardiology consultant, Cleveland Clinic

"This is the approach to follow…the clinically proven way to get your blood sugar under control… and start living again."—John McDougall, MD, founder and medical director of the McDougall program

The Complete Idiot's Guide to Vegan Cooking Review

The Complete Idiot's Guide to Vegan Cooking
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I love the style of cooking in this book: relatively simple recipes, most often with everyday ingredients; well written instructions; and a focus on whole foods (including the use of whole grain flours and unrefined sweeteners whenever possible). It is packed with recipes, 240 to be exact, so there options for new vegans (how to use tofu and seitan, for example), and vegan veterans who want wheat and soy-free recipes that creatively incorporate fruits, vegetables, nuts, and whole grains. That said those who are coming from fast food territory will still be welcomed by the author with some shortcut recipes for things like Tofu Dog Bites.
I have reviewed The Complete Idiot's Guide to Juicing (thumbs up) and The Complete Idiot's Guide to Total Nutrition (a disappointment), so I am well aware of the cutesy "Idiot's" format that some may love, some may feel neutral about, and some may be irritated by. At this point, I am pretty neutral, and able to look into the actual substance of the book.
The book starts with an informational section that is about 25 pages long, but it feels fairly complete for its purpose. Beverly touches on health needs and then dives into explaining milk and meat alternatives. Later in the cookbook is a chapter that is dedicated to making your own cheese and dairy alternatives.
Since I am already dairy-free, I chose to sample a recipe that also had a meat substitute vibe, the Savory Mushroom Sausages. The only changes I made were to cut the maple syrup in half (down to 1 ½ teaspoons) and increase the salt by ¼ teaspoon, as we aren't fans of the sweet flavor that many breakfast sausages have. They were awesome! I actually preferred the leftovers, after chilling overnight, as it really gave the various flavors time to meld. This was a soy-free and optional gluten-free recipe too!
I bake my own granola, so I was excited to trial the Vanilla Nut Granola recipe. It used a very different mix of spices, extracts, nuts, and seeds from my standard recipe. I really enjoyed the subtle sweetness and the very nutty tasting blend. All of Beverly's recipes are very easy to customize, so on the next go there are a few personal touches I will introduce. I think swapping the maple syrup for agave (which is half the price in my neck of the woods), and leaving out the pecans (which tended to burn easily) would make it an ideal blend for my household, adding just a slight touch of additional sweetness. Also, she ingeniously uses a blend of oil and water to keep the granola low fat, but we aren't calorie counters around here, so I will probably use all oil next time for a firmer crunch.
I loved the Carrot-Cashew Butter, a simple and thick spread with a light natural sweetness from the two main ingredients. I was also smitten by the Low Fat Miso Ginger Dressing. It was only my second time using miso, and the experience prior left me with a bad taste in my mouth, literally, but Beverly nailed it in the sweet, ginger-rich condiment.
This is definitely a cookbook that will get some mileage in my kitchen. Recipes that are next up on my list include the Maple Pecan Oatmeal Scones (made with rolled oats!), the Thai Peanut Sauce (I can never get enough of that stuff), the Raw Cheddar Cheese Spread (soy-free), the Raw ABC Nut Milk, the Red Lentil Bologneses (I am on a lentil kick), and the Blueberry Corncakes (a twist on traditional pancakes). But don't stop with my selections, there really are tons of different recipes to pick from in this one, from "Decadent Desserts" to "Marvelous Main Dishes."

The Fiber35 Diet: Nature's Weight Loss Secret Review

The Fiber35 Diet: Nature's Weight Loss Secret
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I think Brenda Watson is correct in her assessment that eating a high fiber diet can help an individual lose weight. Doughnuts, chips, and candy which are all fiberless and nutritionless tend to pack the pounds on. Eating high fiber foods like whole grains, beans, and broccoli make you feel fuller, so you eat less. Many of us know the feeling of eating junk food and feeling bloated and then hungry pretty soon after.
Brenda goes into depth in her book as to how fiber can be beneficial. She also recommends some interesting ideas such as using a sauna to speed up the metabolism and burn more calories.
The disappointment with the book is that the actual diet and the plan for life relies not on real food but on the use of bars and shakes. I don't see anything wrong with drinking a shake or eating a bar, but I would prefer to eat real food and sadly, that is not in this plan.
I noticed after reading other reviews that Brenda sells bars and shakes, so it does seem like she may have an agenda with the meal plan she proposes. Brenda does offer some great information on fiber, if she had offered a plan with bars/shakes and another plan with "real" food, this could have been a great book. But since she didn't I personally feel there are better fiber plan books on the market.

Busy People's Super Simple 30-Minute Menus: 137 Complete Meals Timed for Success Review

Busy People's Super Simple 30-Minute Menus: 137 Complete Meals Timed for Success

I hosted a bridal shower luncheon for my soon-to-be sister-in-law and wanted to make a great impression. I'm pretty good at planning events, but I'm lousy at making food, so was in a quandary until the 30-Minute-Menu cookbook saved me! In it I found the perfect menu for my luncheon, start to finish, and it was a huge hit! With the timings spelled out, I was able to coordinate the entire event seamlessly. No waiting, no soggy sandwiches, no missing ingredients or last-minute dashes to the store. And Dawn has a great knack for finding flavors that combine well together. What a great tool!

Eat to Live: The Amazing Nutrient-Rich Program for Fast and Sustained Weight Loss, Revised Edition Review

Eat to Live: The Amazing Nutrient-Rich Program for Fast and Sustained Weight Loss, Revised Edition
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
The reviewer from Philadelphia below misrepresents Eat To Live. As a physician myself, I am concerned that this misinformation may harm other people by preventing them from reading Dr. Fuhrman's important book - I am especially concerned about our American epidemic of obesity and diet-related diseases like diabetes and cardiovascular disease. Dr. Fuhrman presents the cure in his well-researched book. The reviewer (did this person read the book?) from Philadelphia states that Dr Fuhrman's recommendations allow no animal products when in fact Eat To Live is a diet-style, not a diet. It has no such rigid requirements. In his menu plans he gives 7 days of menu plans for those on a vegetarian version of the plan and 7 days on a non-vegetarian plan. Dr. Fuhrman also makes it clear that a diet rich in vegetables does not have to be all raw or exclude animal foods completely; it is flexible. As a physician, I have observed him in action with patients and he can modify recipes and menu plans to accommodate various tastes and food preferences. It is not an all or nothing plan. However, without reading Eat To Live, your future diet-style will be based on misinformation, not science. It takes experience, creativity and knowledge to make the healthiest way to eat taste favorable for many people. Some people will reject the idea of eating for health based on incomplete information and what they want to eat based on short term thinking (those french fries sound good), rather than enjoying truly more delicious foods that are actually healthful too. Just remember taste is learned and takes a few months to adjust and you can also learn to make healthy food taste great. I have observed that most people over time actually like the taste of this diet-style better then their prior one and love the fact they can eat as much as they want. You get to eat lots of food, not be hungry and get great results too. Get the book and see for yourself. I believe every person in America must read this information; it puts all controversy about diet to rest and may save your life.

Weight Watchers Take-Out Tonight : 150+ Restaurant Favorites to Make at Home--All 8 POINTS or Less Review

Weight Watchers Take-Out Tonight : 150+ Restaurant Favorites to Make at Home--All 8 POINTS or Less
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This may be the best book published under the Weight Watchers' umbrella. It is a wonderful collection of favorite recipes from eight culinary genres. Chinese, Mexican, Indian, Thai, Italian, Greek, Japanese and Deli cuisine is featured. I love food (that's my problem) and delights such as General Tso's Chicken, Chicken Saltimbocca, Spanakopita, Shrimp Pad Thai and Moo Goo Gai Pan are now healthy, tasty and guiltless. You will not believe that these recipes are all 8 points or less. What is even more remarkable is that the family or guests will not suspect that these recipes came from Weight Watchers. This is a great leap forward for Weight Watchers as it makes the most popular restaurant meals not only available in your home, but healthy and delicious.
The book, unlike some earlier Weight Watchers' cookbooks, is very well laid out. The chapters are color coded and the index is arranged by cooking cuisine, with the recipes listed alphabetically. There are many beautiful illustrations as well. Many of the recipes come with a box called Clever Cook's Tips that give the user some useful suggestions, techniques and recipe substitutions.
You don't have to be a Weight Watchers' client to appreciate this book. The recipes are just good, dieting or not! Buy this one...you won't be disappointed.

500 400-Calorie Recipes: Delicious and Satisfying Meals That Keep You to a Balanced 1200-Calorie Diet So You Can Lose Weight without Starving Yourself

First, we were more than a little bit excited to order this book from Amazon in April as it is not scheduled for release until June 1, 2011. That being said, my wife and I absolutely love this cookbook! We've been searching for low-calorie cookbooks to help us succeed while implementing the "400 Calorie Fix" diet by Liz Vaccariello (also available on Amazon) and this book is the perfect compliment to meet the 3-4 400-calorie meals requirement per day.
This cookbook includes simple, down-to-Earth hearty recipes. It doesn't require a lot of fancy items or ingredients that one would be forced to shop for in a specialty grocery store in order to prepare. It does what it exactly what it says in that it offers readers recipes for meals which are both satisfying and filling but still safely remain within the 400-calorie intake range. This book does NOT include color photos and/or sketches of the actual meals or dishes. Some readers may be disappointed by that, but for us it wasn't a drawback.
Each recipe includes the total number of calories, protein, fat, carbs, fiber, sugar as well as the vitamin intake, which was a surprising addition and a welcomed convenience.
The exact content of the book is as follows:
Introduction: Why 400-Calorie Recipes?
Chapter 1: Changing the Way You Think about What You Eat
Chapter 2: A Few Basic Building Blocks
Chapter 3: Traditional Breakfasts
Chapter 4: New Ways to Think about Breakfast
Chapter 5: Lunches and Light Meals
Chapter 6: Dinners: Chicken and Turkey
Chapter 7: Dinners: Beef
Chapter 8: Dinner: Pork
Chapter 9: Dinners: Fish and Seafood
Chapter 10: Dinners: Vegetarian
Chapter 11: Dinners: Soups, Stews, and Chilis
Chapter 12: Mix and Match Meals
Chapter 13: Mix and Match: Main Dishes
Chapter 14: Mix and Match: Starters and Side Dishes
Chapter 15: Mix and Match: Desserts
Chapter 16: Mix and Match: Bread
Chapter 17: Cooking Terms, Weights and Measurements, and Gadgets
Here's one of our favorite recipes thus far taken directly from the book, found on page 360:
Spinach Stuffed Chicken Breasts
These chicken breasts, stuffed with a spinach dressing, make a great start to just about any meal. They are naturally low in fat and calories and high in nutrient density.
8 slices low sodium bacon
1 cup (160 g) onion, finely chopped
1/2 pound (225 g) fresh spinach, washed and chopped
1/4 cup (60 ml) egg substitute
1/2 cup (15 g) croutons, lightly crushed
1/4 teaspoon garlic powder
8 boneless, skinless chicken breasts
Black Pepper to taste
Fry bacon; drain and crumble. Reserve 2 tablespoons (28 ml) drippings. Saute onion in bacon drippings until soft. Remove from heat and stir in spinach, egg substitute, croutons, garlic, and crumbled bacon. Cut pocket in thick side of each chicken breast. Stuff with spinach mixture and close with wooden pick. Sprinkle with black pepper. Place breasts in 9 x 12-inch (23 x 30 cm) baking dish and cook in preheated 350 degree (180 degree Celsius or gas mark 4) oven until done, about 1/2 hour. Remove wooden picks before serving.
8 Servings
Each with: 151 Calories (29% from Fat, 58% from Protein, 13% from Carb); 22 g Protein; 5 g Total Fat; 1 g Unsaturated Fat; 2 g Monounsaturated Fat; 1 g Polyunsaturated Fat; 5 g Carb; 1 g Fiber; 1 g Sugar; 213 mg Phosphorus; 47 mg Calcium; 179 mg Sodium; 443 mg Potassium; 2704 IU Vitamin A; 5 mg ATE Vitamin E; 10 mg Vitamin C; 50 mg Cholesterol
TIP: These are great on a grill. Try them on medium for about 20 minutes.

40-30-30 Fat Burning Nutrition: The Dietary Hormonal Connection to Permanent Weight Loss and Better Health Review

40-30-30 Fat Burning Nutrition: The Dietary Hormonal Connection to Permanent Weight Loss and Better Health
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I started this plan over one year ago, and I am now 2/3 the man I used to be. I tipped the scales at over 320 pounds and have dropped 91 pounds to date through eating 40-30-30 and proper exercise. The diet plan is easy to follow and gives you more room for error than any other plan on the market. By that I mean it is easy for you to hop back on the plan if you slip up one meal or even one or two days. Once your body gets "Balanced" you maintain your weight, with a ton of new found energy. You begin to burn fat instead of storing it and your cravings become less and less a factor in dieting.
The addition of sample menus completes this easy to follow change in eating and helps keep you on track and focused. This book has fat flush meals, vegetarian fat flush meals and plain old 40-30-30 balanced meals, so pick one and get started. I won't kid you, the first few weeks were rough but after that the plan melted off, on average, 10 pounds per month and I'm still dropping pounds and inches with only 9 pounds to my goal weight. I've gone from a XXXL and XXL to an XL and from 46-48 pants to 36-38 pants. My heart rate at rest is 48 and my blood pressure is 116/72. I eat balanced meals and snacks when I want and exercise 4-5 times weekly, and my new found favorite snack is a "Balance" bar. I still have difficulty with Carbs, so I eat them before heading to the gym, and use that extra energy as a boost for a better workout!
This plan is awesome and comes highly recommended by me. Just watch your pocket book, because when you drop as much weight as I have a new wardrobe is a much needed and more than welcome expense!

Slim and Scrumptious: More Than 75 Delicious, Healthy Meals Your Family Will Love Review

Slim and Scrumptious: More Than 75 Delicious, Healthy Meals Your Family Will Love
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I have mixed emotions about this cookbook because the three recipes I have cooked (Chicken Lettuce Wraps, Beef and Bell Pepper Stir Fry, and Double Chocolate Pancakes with Strawberry Sauce) were fantastic. The reason I only gave the book three stars is that several of the recipes are obviously flawed. On page 106, the Mediterranean Meatloaf calls for 1/4 pounds (sic) ground turkey and no other meat. I'm guessing that's not enough meat to make a meatloaf for 6 people and perhaps it was supposed to be 1 1/4 pounds. On page 178, the picture of the Summer Squash Tian clearly includes both yellow squash and zucchini but the recipe doesn't include zucchini.
I haven't studied the book enough to know if there are other errors and I will still try other recipes, it just seems like a lot of money for a book that needed more time with the editor.
UPDATE: Joy wrote to let me know that the error in the Mediterranean Meatloaf recipe will be corrected in future printings so I've updated my rating to five stars. And just so you know, I've tried three more recipes, the Hoisin-Glazed Salmon, Summer Squash Tian (I added zucchini), and Sesame Chicken Tenders and they were all very good. With recipes corrected, this is definitely a 5-Star cookbook!

The Formula: A Personalized 40-30-30 Fat-Burning Nutrition Program Review

The Formula: A Personalized 40-30-30 Fat-Burning Nutrition Program
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
"The Formula" is an easy to understand, easy to follow 40:30:30 cookbook. I like it better now than when we began. I want to personally thank the Daousts for their work.
I wrote an anonymous review from Redondo Beach after my first week. It's now been eight weeks. I'm 6 feet tall and was 221 pounds. I have lost 22 pounds. My goal is to reach 180. I broke 200 this past weekend. By the way, I have not exercised at all. Perhaps pounds do come off easier when starting out 40 lbs over, but they are coming off.
My doctor told me three years ago, "Lose 30 lbs and lower your blood pressure. Goodbye." No suggestions, no help. Almost by accident my wife saw The Formula mentioned on TV. It looked "balanced." We tried it.
The 40:30:30 system works and is painless weight loss. Yes, protein sources such as 2% cottage cheese, lowfat cheese, chicken, beef and whey are somewhat expensive. We have had to re-learn shopping. We shop the perimeter of the market, not the inside aisles. We have re-learned cooking and eating, too. Yes, 40:30:30 is low calorie. That's the point: low calorie without hunger. How else are you going to lose weight? The difference is that I don't want to go off this diet. It's simply a better way to eat.
It's more than weight loss, though. With more study, I find this diet is really about controlling hormones, not calories (see "Entering The Zone," by Dr. Barry Sears, to understand the theory behind the practice in this book). At age 49 and 40 lbs overweight, I had around 164,000 calories stored. (9 cal/gram of fat.) How to get that fat to burn off? 40:30:30 controls glucose/blood sugar levels, which in turn controls insulin levels. With insulin under control, another hormone, glucagon, can come into play. This hormone tells the body to burn fat. It releases the stored fat energy. As long as I am burning that fat, I don't feel hungry and I am losing weight, even at night, even without exercise.
The gentleman who only had a few pounds to lose and complained he didn't lose anything in a week might have overlooked what was actually going on in his body: reduction of body fat and the build up of lean muscle mass. This can happen when one is exercising, which he was. When put on this diet, professional football players actually gained as much as eleven pounds, but reduced the percentage of body fat. They became leaner, stronger, faster and more agile. One man started the diet at 190 and never lost a pound. He had to buy a new wardrobe, though, because he leaned out. He looked great.
For me, my mood is better, I handle stress better, I sleep better, I have less intestinal gas (better digestion) and my blood pressure is normal. I have increased energy, need less sleep, and rise early on weekends ready to go instead of taking most of the weekend to recover from the week's stresses. I feel as if I've been given many additional years of active life.
Does it require cooking and prep? Yes. Good food doesn't just happen. It takes some work. Is it a burden? No. My wife felt she was going to lose me unless we did something. She views this as a ministry to me, which I deeply appreciate. I have gotten into the kitchen, too. We are eating fruits, vegetables, lean meats, dairy-all good stuff. We don't miss the pizza and white bread. It's fun baking good food. It's better than staring at some lamebrain TV sitcom, which is what I was doing because I had no energy. What's more, I know the food we prepare is exactly right for us and tastes great. Consider another angle: we in America have every food we need, in high quality, available at good prices all year long. It's right there in the store. That is an amazing blessing. Take advantage of it.
Look--you can find dozens of reasons to stay fat. "I don't have time." "If we had a personal chef, I'd do it." "I refuse to give up some foods." "I don't like to shop and want the food to jump into my mouth by itself and still want to look like a movie star." If you like it that way, fine. All I know is that I have to buy new clothes because everything I have is too large. I also have people (especially women) asking me what is going on and how I lost so much weight so fast. I print out a copy of this ... page and give it to them.
The method is in The Formula and several other 40:30:30 cookbooks. The theory is in Dr. Sears' works on The Zone. The information you need is there. You don't need magic potions. You don't need exercise equipment. You don't need appetite suppressants. You don't need a cabinet full of supplements. You don't need liposuction.
What you need is recipes for each meal and each snack that give your body the right portions of carbohydrates, fat and protein it needs for peak performance--not too much food, not too little.
This book is a great start. The rest is up to you.
