Dr. McDougall's Right Foods Vegan Split Pea Soup with Barley, 2.5-Ounce Cups (Pack of 6) Review

We all know no packaged soup--canned or cuppa--is gonna be as delicious as the fresh, home-made stuff. Still, convenience is worth a bit of sacrifice, for those rushed or lazy days. I ordered this because 1. I like split pea, it's like a filling, comfort soup and 2 I wanted to try a vegan soup (no ham or the other stuff that they usually put in pea soup).
I didn't expect much. I expected ADEQUATE, no more.
Well, surprise me. This was TASTY. I am very pleased with this dried/cup soup. If you follow instructions precisely, it should come out with a terrific texture (not too runny, not too thick) and a nice pea flavor. My only quibble is that it's on the salty side (though not eye-crossingly so).
I would definitely get more of this. I'm gonna go through this case pretty fast, I can tell you.
I'm ready to try more of McDougall's vegan soups. If others are as good or better than the Vegan Split Pea with Barley, then I'm in for some nice convenience lunches.
Each container has 240 calories (that's considered two servings, but please, who eats just half?), 10 grams of fiber, 16 grams of protein, 1 gram of fat (no trans fats), and 42 carbs. The sodium count is 600mg. 24% of Vitamin A requirement.
Yum.

Take some to work for bartering favors from co-workers! You'll probably be shocked when you taste this soup. No other canned or dried split pea soup tastes so close to a home-made, long-simmered soup. If you like split pea soup that's rich and thick, with just a bit of smoked ham flavor, you've got to try ours. We've added pea halves and a few bits of soft barley, to make it all the more hearty and satisfying. A tasty, High-fiber, no cholesterol, and protein treat.

Dr. McDougall's Right Foods Vegan Miso Ramen, 1.9-Ounce Cups (Pack of 6) Review

Dr. McDougall's Right Foods Vegan Miso Ramen, 1.9-Ounce Cups (Pack of 6)

I keep these soup cups in my desk at work. They're really easy to make with the hot water from the water cooler. Be careful because the cup becomes too hot to hold sometimes.
This is my favorite flavor from this brand line, though it smells funny to coworkers who aren't used to miso! I think it tastes great and makes a good snack or goes great with a sandwich or salad to be a lunch. The noodles are a great addition--regular miso soup is just too watery to be filling.
The seasoning comes in a packet so you can use less and get just as flavorful a meal but have less salt in your diet.
Note the nutrition info link at Amazon is based on half the package. I can't imagine anyone saving the rest for later, and 180 calories for the whole thing isn't exactly too much food! The cups I have purchased locally list it as one 180-cal serving so perhaps packaging has changed. Meanwhile I've had some cups seep a bit while eating them so it's not a container that's going to hold your soup longer than your mealtime. Put a napkin under the cup just in case.
I give it five stars for flavor and convenience but only four total because of the details/execution (leaks, hot cup, half portion nutrition labeling). It also seems a little pricey at two+ bucks each in my local grocery, but it's much better than traditional Ramen.

Dr. McDougall's Right Foods Vegan Black Bean & Lime Soup, 3.4-Ounce Cups (Pack of 6) Review

I have a hectic job that doesn't often allow me a lunch break so Dr. McDougall's products work out great for me. I follow a high protein diet and this Black Bean soup is loaded with both fiber and protein without sacrificing taste. Just add boiling or very hot water and you can easily eat it at your desk as it takes up about as much space as a large coffee mug. Many reviewers find the sodium content high and, as with most soups, it is. A good workaround to resolve this is to pour in about half of the flavor packet. There is minimal flavor change and a decrease (even though it may be slight) in sodium. I heartily recommend this soup for not only those on the go, but also for those who enjoy great soups.

I purchased this flavor at a health food store. I have mixed feelings about most McDougall meals but this was just incredible! It's restaurant quality stir-fry that takes 4-5 minutes to microwave. Next time I make it, I will add some tofu or edamame. I will definitely buy it again!

If you can get past the putrid appearance of the finished product, it's actually quite tasty. Not quite a true tamale taste, but close enough to satisfy the craving for the real thing. Ugly but Good!

This Tamale Pie is a bold, energy-packed meal that's rich with the corn flavors of polenta and masa harina. We mix in baked - not fried - tortilla chips, pinto beans, and mildly spicy, real New Mexico ground chilies. It's nacho average kind of lunch. No added oil, high-fiber, bold, zesty, and its gluten free.

Average Reviews:

I'm a long-time customer of McDougall Right Foods, dating back to early 2004.
The main selling point of Right Foods cups is that they are "vegan", meaning that there are nothing animal-related in them (no meat, fish, dairy, eggs, or byproducts of such). All ingredients are natural (no chemicals added). Even the cup container itself is labeled "food-grade". Some (not all) food cups contain only organic ingredients, and some are gluten-free; each cup is so labeled if applicable.
The cups provide a fast snack or meal-idea: pour boiling water into the cup, stir, let stand a few minutes, and eat or pour over such as pasta and rice.
The company does well to make the food cups taste good, and each individual will have his/her own favorites.
Keep in mind that McDougall food cups are aimed at the vegan/health-consicious market. Since they are pricey (the large cups go for almost $2.00 each), I wouldn't recommend them for non-vegans/vegetarians, as there are many less-expensive (and less-healthy) alternatives.Amazon sells the food cups for less than the Right Foods website does; the company website has a larger variety.
Those who are vegan or thinking of becoming vegan would do well to visit Dr. McDougall's website (drmcdougall dot com) for more information.

Flavorful, mild curry. Rice is a little chewy, so I usually let it stew in it's cup an extra minute or two, or even shove it in a bowl and nuke it in the microwave for a minute at the end...and I often add extra vegetables, too. (Can you tell I eat this stuff at home, not at work?)

This is one of my staples. I purchase it every other month on auto delivery. It honestly taste like hot & sour soup. It is a little spicy. So, if you don't care for spice you might want to pass it up. But, I doubt it would be too spicy for most people.

I live in Northern New Mexico, where tortilla soup recipes are printed both in the paper and stored in safety deposit boxes. I eat this because I like the taste. At home I usually add some green chile since it is a little bland, but at work, right out of the cup. Highly recommended. You can add red chile or a little cayenne if too bland for the office. Peeling green chiles in the lunch room makes a bit of a mess. Prepared green chile could be left in the office fridge, though.
